FAQ’s

Q. I’m chained to my business and am really burned-out. I haven’t taken a real vacation in years, and there’s never any time for me. How do I find time for myself when I can never leave?

A. Document all your day-to-day tasks ie: check-in, prep, bathing, drying, etc. and turn them into training/procedure manuals. Have your employees help. Make sure everyone is well-trained in the way you want things done, and then delegate. As they take over some of the things you have been doing, you will find that time freed up for you.

Remember: You can’t (and shouldn’t!) do it all!

Q. I bend over backwards for my staff. How do I stop working for them and get them working for me?

A. Communicating is the most important thing you can do in your business to set the tone for your employees. A clear employee handbook, regular meetings and one-on-one feedback will help turn this around. Be clear about your expectations and involve them in the process and they will become more committed to your success.

Q. It’s impossible to find good, honest, hard-working groomers. Where do I find qualified employees?

A. Have your employees train their replacements within the business. Work with your top groomers to improve their skills, and then have them work with your less-skilled groomers, who will then work with your bathers. You will always have trained staff on hand ready to move up as needed.

Q. There seems to be a lot of conflict and drama in my shop.  How do I get employees that will work together as a team?

A. First of all, you have to allow no drama.  I have a “No Gossip” policy in my shop.  I set aside time each month to meet with employees one on one to improve communication with my staff and handle any difficulties.  In between meetings, my staff can come to me with problems if they become an issue.

Second, it is important to make sure your staff have similar goals.  It is important that your employees have shared values, and ideals so that they can contribute to a positive work environment.  By fostering clear communication and rewarding teamwork in your shop, you will see improved results and have lasting happy employees.

Q. I don’t know a lot about computers, websites and technological media. How do I bring my business up to date?

A. There’s a lot of help for us “old-schoolers” out there. There are lots of sources for web building, email newsletters and advertising, and they can cost a fraction of what you’ve been paying for print ads, and reach a WHOLE lot more people. Use your existing staff  or your kids who have grown up in the “information age” to help create a site on facebook and manage your online advertising. They’ll think they’ve gone to heaven!
